Bee Bed

Bee Bed.jpeg

Planted in 2021 our bee bed  one of our most exciting spaces and a great example of what you can do in small spaces to encourage pollinators to your gardens.

Over the years we have some beautiful plants growing in our Bee Bed including a glorious, giant bergamot, sweetly scented sweet pea meadow vetchling and the classic favourite lavender.  There is an old saying “More in the garden grows than the gardener sows”.

Unfortunately time and weather has not been kind to the structure and it has begun to rot and bulge, with burrowing insects contributing the the decay of the raised bed.

Stirling Council is responsible for the structure and we have been in discussions with the Land Services Team who have agreed to allow us to lower the bed and recreate a bigger, more diverse bed that will be rich in biodiversity and buzzing with pollinators.

We have a lot work planned over the next few months to get the bee bed ready.

September

The plants will be removed from the bed into pots and safely stored until we’re ready to replant.

October and November

The turf will be removed from the extended part of the new bee bed and the raised bed will be dismantled.  The wooden sleepers will be put aside for use as edging.

The new border will be marked out and channels will be dug to allow the sleepers to be sunk into the ground.

Planter mix compost will be added to the site and the area will be dug over to improve the soil quality.

Spring 2025

Planting will begin in the spring.

Planning and Design

Our Chair Mary is having great fun planning and choosing the plants for the new bee bed . We are taking into account the existing plants we have and have also compiled a list of some favourites to mark trustees past and present as well as a list of suitable plants from Nick Trull who designed the Bee Bed in 2021.

We are planning to add a Black Lace Elder outside the bed and a new rose called Persica Rose called See You  is now available and will be a wonderful addition to the plot.
